Christmas Island. Army Port Operator

Hi there
I am also enquiring about Christmas Island in 1956 where my late dad Alexander Alec Crowe ( Pontoon Plodder ) was stationed out there as a Lance Corporal, He was training to become a Waterman on the River Thames when he got called up in 1955. He worked in a small specialist group I have been told by his sister who has given me some photo's etc. He was working on the Pontoon loading and unloading for the airfield build. When he got onto the island there was nothing there apparently. I have been told he flew out there via a stop off at New York and returned by boat which took 1 month to return. I have a telegram his sent to my late mother stating " I will be home tonight " . It came addressed from Liverpool. I no know more. I would love someone else who was on the island at this time to add their memories and stories.
Hope to see some stories or you can contact me.
