28 Squadron
This is the main page for the squadron or unit. More info will be added here as I get the time, but for now it's a "base" for establishing comms with other members of the same unit. You can post messages for other members of the same unit using the messages link above this blurb, and you can also search for other members of this unit. Once you find them, click on their name to send an email direct to them. Please note that this website doesn't "remember" your emails, they are sent direct from you to the recipient without sappers.co.uk getting in the way. That helps you get in touch quickly and it keeps everything simple and free. Have fun. Gordon
508 STRE (V)
508 STRE (Works) (V) was formed as a Works Team in 1979 after a re-organisation of 111 Engineer Regiment. The Unit was made up of only 30 Personel and all members were qualified tradesmen in civvy street and the Royal Engineers used their skills and expertise to carry out tasks the regulars didnt have time to complete or were lacking in knowledge.
Most of the Team members were of the rank Sergeant or above due to their qualifications. The Army sent the Unit on some cracking Tours, when most RE Units were going to Weymouth or Ripon we were deployed to many parts of Germany, Gibraltar, Cyprus, Berlin, Hong Kong and the Falkland Islands, only once can I remember us getting an English Camp when we went to Portland to design and build a Fire Training facility not long after the Falklands trouble.
Every camp we attended consisted us working with local agencies in the design and execution of the project, we had some great camps and were lucky to be in Berlin when Check Point "Charlie" was removed, in Hong Kong just before we handed back to the Chinese and in Cyprus serving with the UN when there were still daily fights across the border in Nicosia.
After another re-organisation we became part of the Military Works Force and moved to Chilwell Barracks Nottingham.
The Unit remains in existance, and unfortunately just after I left the Royal Warrant and Law was changed allowing selected or volunteers to be called up for Active Duty and I am aware several of the Unit have served in Afgan.
Although a small unit we worked hard and played hard. Our motto of We've Been, We've Seen is based on the RE Motto of Ubique.
Hope this is the sort of thing you want, Many Thanks
Phil Howell (Howlo)

Battlefield Engineering Wing
This is just a temporary holding page for this unit until someone who joins this unit sends me some more info about it.
Communications Training Wing
This is a holding page for this unit, until someone sends me some more interesting information to put here. If you were part of this unit, please send me something as I know nothing about it. If you want the other Royal Engineers to find you, the more info I put here, the more easily google will link to it, and so more of your mates will get in touch. REgards, Gordon
Gib Barracks unspec units - use w caution
This is a catch-all unit for places that aren't captured elsewhere. It doesn't cover 56 Trg Sqn, or 63 Trg Sqn or any of those places that are already listed separately, but it does help for those who were in the cookhouse or assigned to some obscure posting down at Hawley Hard that I cannot cover anywhere else. Don't put yourself here unless there really is nowhere else to record your details, or no-one will ever find you.
HQ Combat Engineer School
I've added this unit by recent request but I have no interesting history or anything else to put here. If you know anything about it please email me something and I'll put it up here. Meanwhile you can still use it to add your work history and so other people will be better able to find you. REgards, Gordon

TA - 111 Regt RE(V)
111 Regt RE (V) was a sponsored Regiment.
It was run by Central Volunteer HQ, Minley Manor
It had no drill halls and only mustered for annual camp and 2 weekends a year (a bit more for officers), initial form up for camp was in 1 Training Regt, Cove, Farnborough.
Most members had served in the regular army or a TA unit for a few years or had a relevant civilian qualification (e.g. electrician, plant operator).
It existed from 1967 to 1992 and consisted of 120 and 130 squadrons plus, from 1978, 198 Field Park Squadron that had been a seperate squadron.
When I was in (1977-80) the role was being part of the Logistic Support Group which was a near-Brigade size unit of Combat Support and Combat Service Support units that supported UK Mobile Force, a large Brigade size unit including 2 Para Battalions which had a flank reinforcement role (e.g. Denmark).
It was useful for those who could not find the time for more weekends and weekly drills or lived in an area far from a TA unit.
I served while I was doing a part-time degree then returned to my old TA Regt (71).
The weird thing was turning up for camp and finding half the troop was new, including SNCOs, but it met a need
The full story is told in "The History of Central Volunteer Headquarters Royal Engineers" by Col GF Edwards TD, an Inst RE publication

TA - 501 STRE
501 STRE(BP)(V), 502 STRE(BP)(V) and 503 STRE(BP)(V) were all Bulk Petroleum Specialist Teams within 65 CRE(V), part of MWF(V), based at Gibraltar Barracks/Minley Manor. The Teams were amalgamated into 503 STRE(Fuels Infra)(V), becoming the TA element of 64 Wks Gp RE, 170 (Infra Sp) Engr Gp RE, providing the Army with specialist knowledge of oil extraction and refining facilities.
TA - 502 STRE
I had this from Nigel Burt in January 2014 - good info as I had heard nothing beforehand:
